PSA - Friend of First

The promotion of science in our schools is a topic near and dear to my heart and here's a great way to help:

New non-profit charity Friends of FIRST(www.friendsoffirst.org) doing
some great work supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
education in our local public schools by funding FIRST robotics teams.
Here is an artical Nola.com did about them.

They're currently working with Morris Jeff Community School and Samuel J
Green school to start FIRST LEGO League teams and in talks with several
others.  Promoting STEM education in New Orleans is important to all so
check them out and consider supporting them.

They can also be found on facebook at www.facebook.com/friendsoffirst.

Like and share to help get the word out.

Thanks!

An oddly fantastic resource for giving your kid access to the kind of science education they SHOULd get in school-- but probably don`t get in school-- is, of all things, pintrest.

Pintrest is awesome for math and science resources for teaching and homeschooling.

Another tip for parents stuck in some kind of red state hel is the science departments at your local universities.

University science departments are chock full of people who are sick of the fundie BS they have to deal with, and they are surprisingly willing to let actual children come in to see how things are done.

We took Brownies to look into space at a big telescope, and had tours of a biology lab and a great lesson on how to design experiments.

A lot of the time a smart high school age kid can get permission to sit in on undergrad lectures.

Also, do not underestimate the power of an awesome art teacher to sneak a lot of math and science into art class. It can be done. It is being done.

The art class hack is pretty sweet, because many artists who are natural lead ins for math art did tonnes of Christian art... so, really, how convincing are their complaints when they protest?

Though I do know of fundies who petitioned to get a librarian fired for putting a poster about the age of sail up on the wall-- the word sextant contains the word sex, after all.
