Yes...there is at least one true patriot left in Washington

"Any president who says, I don't care, or I will not respond to what the people of this country are saying about Iraq or anything else, or I don't care what the Congress does, I am going to proceed _ if a president really believes that, then there are _ what I was pointing out, there are ways to deal with that," said Hagel, who is considering a 2008 presidential run.

"This is not a monarchy," he added, referring to the possibility that some lawmakers may seek impeachment. "There are ways to deal with it. And I would hope the president understands that."

What I think Hagel understands that his spineless colleagues won't admit is that this is going to have to come down to impeachment. Bush and Cheney should not only be impeached, they should be tried for war crimes, war profiteering, and treason...we've already proven they're guilty of treason in the Libby trial. They are enemies of the state and should be treated as such.

Hagel was impressive on This Week. What HuffPo can't fully communicate is how emotional Hagel was. He was clearly pissed at the arrogance, the dismissive nature of the way the executive branch is treating the legislative branch, at one point saying that if Bush really thinks he can do what he wants without regard for Congress, "he's getting some bad advice and I would suggest they all go back and re-read the Constitution."

I have no idea what his chances are should he run for president, but I think he's genuine, sincere and passionate. It's pretty damn refreshing.

I like Hagel too, even though he opposed the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform legislation. But I also resent it a bit that Republicans who stand up for the right thing get extra cred over Democrats who've been doing it better and longer, such as the aforementioned Feingold who was one of the few US Senators to oppose the war and the only one to vote against the Patriot Act (98-1). Feingold was also the first Senator to call for censure against Bush for lying about the war. As far as I know, he is still the only one advocating censure.

Feingold is also the only non-millionaire in the US Senate.

I saw this article too and was impressed. While I agree with Southern Leftist that there are some Demos who have been saying this longer and just as loudly, I think it takes a lot of courage for Hagel to come out and say these things about a member of his own party. He no doubt has had a lot of pressure calls this morning, with folks on his side of the aisle blasting him for saying it out loud. Ballsy bastard.
