Verily, verily I say unto thee....

...readeth from the Gospel of Clancy and thou shall laugh so hard, thou shall pee.

The "Prophet of Conprofits", Leonard Lucas took Bobby "the exorcist" Jindal's voucher program to glorious new heights.  The Apostle nabbed 80 vouchers @ $4,555/voucher for his Light City Academy school that has an enrollment of only 53 students.  I assume the 27 extra spots were for the holy spirt.  That puts Lucas pulling down $364k from the voucher program.

I reported back in June that I had tracked down a whopping 23 nonprofit entities registered under the Apostle with seven being housed in a small, gutted building at 6030 St. Claude Avenue.  That building is the clown car of pseudo-charities.  I knew about the vouchers but I wanted to find out more about the school before I blogged about it.  No matter...I have bigger fish to fry at the moment.

However, I would like to congratulate Governor Jindal on his voucher program.  In his effort to make the children of Louisiana the stupidest most ill-informed in the state, he has unwittingly resurrected the Apostle of Appropriation....The Prophet of Con-profits.....The Ayatollah of public payola....Leonard Lucas is risen!  Glory be to 501c3!

Oh and don't bother looking for 990's....religious organizations don't have to disclose them.

"... and do not put me to the test, for I do not do well on tests..." had me laughing.

The rest of this is not really funny at all, is it?

Children, "strangers" (aliens or immigrants or even people from the next town), and widows or women left by men who should have done right by them are three groups of people that the Bible says God does not want you to hurt, and he is really, really pissed if you do hurt them.

He considers them his own, and if you hurt them, you are hurting his family, and the good works you do on top of the harm you've done don't impress him at fucking all.

How come the fundies who want these vouchers or the ministers who want these vouchers or the Catholics who cover up child abuse in Church never read that part of the message aloud?

I thought the whole thing was brilliantly funny.

Now it's also tragic but that's usually where humor lies.

The whole piece is funny. The topic is not, I meant.

That it has come to this.

For the record, that address once housed Emergency Communities - a now-defunct disaster relief organization which operated sites in St. Bernard, Plaquemines, and Orleans Parishes. E.C. was in no way a pseudo-charity, but served recovering communities in these parishes during 2005, 2006, and 2007 faithfully and honestly. I was proud to volunteer with that organization for my first year here in New Orleans, and it was the forbearer of the organization which I now have the pleasure of working with - lowernine.org - still rebuilding homes in the Lower Ninth Ward that were damaged in the levee breaches of 2005. Please be careful not to paint all organizations with the same brush, shared site addresses notwithstanding. Location, location, location! We're still only about fifty feet from there, in a neighborhood which still needs a great deal of support. Feel free to look up our financials.
