..errrr...

Cao takes the offensive in battle for re-election, launches attacks on Richmond

He acknowledged having told Berry the purchase was made in 2002, but said after researching the records, he determined the purchase was made in 2007.

I guess that's one way to put it, Jack....(cough...choke).

Crapola. Democratic cojones, anyone? Where'd they go? They've shriveled up somewhere in the bowels of the state's Dem organizations well before Richmond was chosen to represent. They didn't WANT to vet this candidate. It's sad.

"It also illustrates the increasing influence of the Internet as a vehicle for disseminating damning information widely, anonymously and virtually for free -- all under the mantle of reportage."

You mean bloggers can do the job members of the mainstream media are supposed to do, but don't? And, someone bring me my smelling salts, you're distributing this information far and wide on your own dime and time, but it's not really journalism, right? Gimme a break.

Yeah that was rich. They just had to put that snark in. I don't know how they can see their computer screens to write these stories...I mean looking down your nose like that.

"All under the mantle of reportage" oooooo......reportage......the sacred domain of reportage.

Snootiness aside, I stand by everything I wrote as emphatically true. And I'm not close to being done.

The major difference I see between citizen-bloggers and newspaper reporters is bloggers generally have much thicker hides. Well done Dambala.

We look forwrad to your continued reporting on this.

ok i also think this story was weak, and chided Krupa over it.

but...i read something that made me go "WHAT?" -- "In an interview, Berry said he considers Dixon a friend; he said she has gone on double dates with him."

...what!? is the TP right in saying NOCE's executive director, the lady guilty of stealing $30,000 and likley central to any possible Richmond criminal scam involving NOCE, is a friend of yours? if so, why wasnt that mentioned in your reports on NOCE, especially when you said you wouldnt name her since she wasnt a public servant and was more or less an innocent bystander? that would have been a *great time* for "full disclosure", which enables us to weigh things fairly and understand relevant biases.

dont get pissy, but in no way can you resent the TP for questioning your reporting legitimacy if you chose not to disclose something so clearly relevant to your own reporting and our interpretation of it. for reals dude. all for the meffert stuff, but you cant leave that kind of information out.

if true.

@Sop811 - thick hides? i dunno about that. ive personally cricitized Krupa and others several times on their reporting, and theyve always responded calmly on why they did what they did. but despite being a supportive fan of AZ, when i occasionally criticize this blog on what i feel are fair points, it unleashes all kinds of "Get the hell out of here!!" tirades.

not sure thats the definition of a thick hide.

does anyone else think its odd that Tina Dixon's charge of stealing $30,000 from a state-funded non-profit was EXPUNGED when she paid *half* of it back?

I LOVE THE PICAYUNE.

Hey, who expunged it, what judge? They don't tell you.

When did it happen? They don't tell you.

Which attorney handled it? They don't tell you.

Let's guess - Ike Spears and a Spears supported judge were involved, right???

That line about Sutton's discovery was by far the standout stinker in the article. Doesn't pass the laugh test, unless "researched" suddenly became synonymous with "magically and conveniently appeared".

However, I will say Anon #2 makes a legitimate point.

I second what the the anon said about thick hides and lack thereof. It can be kind a sorority house around here.

Not pissy, and you have a point. Although I never hid that fact, I even stated it in on stage in the Rising Tide panel.

I have been out of contact with Tina since about 1998, I knew her back around 1996, 97, 98.

Here's full disclosure, when I started researching this story I read the background information on NOCE and saw her name as the Executive Director. I wasn't sure if it was her and I contacted her on Facebook to find out. We had a subsequent phone conversation in which she confirmed it was her but would not comment about the issue and she asked me not to involve her in the story. I told her I would do what I can to not mention her name....so yes, I was trying to protect her from further pain. She has child now and is married and I didn't feel like naming her would contribute to the story anyway.

You make your own ethical call on that...I accept and understand your criticism but I never "hid" the fact that I knew Tina. For the record, I "know" some of the people involved in the crime camera case as well. But I don't talk to them every day or hang out with them.

The reason the TP is bringing that issue up is because someone claimed I was a jilted lover of Tina's, which was the impetus for my stories on Cedric....which is ridiculous. I honestly had not spoken to Tina for nearly a decade, before I started researching this story, so while I consider her a "friend", I had no idea about NOCE or Cedric until March of this year.

I doubt she considers me a friend any longer but I willfully admit that I was trying to keep her name out of the story, and if I'm not mistaken I even said that in the original post.

That be the truth....judge me as you will.

Regarding the "reportage" snark - let it roll off your back, Dambala. This is your personal blog where you're free to raise questions, not an esteemed bastion of broadsheet daily journalism staffed by tie-choked armies of J-school grads hating their lives in 3/4-wall cubicles under fluorescent lighting.
You can write what you want to write without the personal political bias of Ashton Phelps being a factor.
And you do. And it's lovely.
They're just pissed because you scoop them frequently and contribute in your own small way to the slow, painful demise of old-school print media. Oh well.

@az - cool. thanks for the disclosure/background.

this Sutton character, have never met him. is he old enough to confuse 3 years ago w/ 8 years ago?

The "slow demise of the old school print media" is nothing to crow over.

It would be great if the good reporters who work at papers were allowed to do their jobs, and Dambala has praised some of the local print guys many times.

(Disclosure: I am not a newspaperman blowing my own horn.)

I like some of the blogs, because they bring back the fire in the belly that good print and investigative journalists used to have.

I think they give the good professional journalists of today some room to undertake the muckraking parts of their jobs.

The blogs move the cultural middle closer to the actual middle, challenging the media's slide towards huge conglomorates and corporate controlled infotainment.

Some of the best contemporary investigative journalists have their own web sites and string together a bunch of regular freelance gigs, rather than having the security of a lifetime job and pay check in the newsroom of a city or national paper.

Rereading the book about Woodward and Bernstien's work on the Watergate story made me miss a time I wasn't even alive to live through.

It wasn't just the reporters I admired, it was the editors who let them run with the story and backed them up.

I bet the reporters of today, who no doubt have large student loans from J-school, instead of ink stained fingers from working their way up from copy boy, might like to have either the job security of the old newsroom or the freedom of the amateur journalist blogger.

Oh, and Zombie, high five.

There are bloggers and there are commenters. What you describe goes on in the comments to newspaper stories too.

Should Dambala tells you to get the hell out we'll visit again on the subject.

I have never told anyone to get the hell out of this blog...not even the insane Deke's who were trying to justify the noose in their front yard.

I've told people to start their own blog, and I've told them don't read the blog if they don't like what it says, but I've never told anyone to get off or not to criticize me.

You have no idea, O. You should hear the back story. All I will say is that Ike Spears has a lot more money than I do.

I like Cao, I am glad we have a Vietnamese-American in Congress. But I do not like his silly Catholic anti-choice view. I also think the Republicans are so opposed to us that we cannot vote for any Republican. House of Reps term is 2 years, so we can get Richmond out before he does much harm.

The TP cowards...why didn't they just go ahead and confirm the allegations. You didn't just provide the smoking gun, you have provided the gun, the target, the gunmen, etc. And...the state Dems are fools for covering for a Doller Bill wannabe...Cao is obviously no Leander Perez. I can't believe I am saying it, but I am a Democrat For Cao.

the funny thing is when "real" journalists site a blog as a source, that's good reporting on their part.

when a blogger cleans their clock from an investigative standpoint, it's amateur hour....

of course there's nobody on Howard Ave. that's going to be nominated for a Pulitzer.

Man, I liked that comment about this site being a sorority house. As I read the rest of the comments, I was imagining a beautiful catfight.

I wish this site was more like sorority girls fighting.
