Comment Bump 2: June 29, 2012

batcave911 has left a new comment on your post "Hey, I think I found Jesus...":

I am in Real Estate, and there is a link that you can go house by house looking at which property is tax exempt.
I was FLOORED !
there are TONS of them, most near churches, or are called churches, but really are not.

I would like to get together and collaborate, maybe our stories together

cheers,
Brad

You know what I would love to see for those of you tech savvy cats out there?  I would like to see a map of 501.c3 properties around St. Claude avenue.  I want to see it because I've already seen it and it will floor you...trust me.

One of you guys pulled that off with the Yeager Foundation properties a couple of years ago...I'd love it if someone could do it again.

According to Charity Blossom, there are 154 registered non-profits in the 70117 area code:

501c3 organizations in 70117

Does anyone know an easy way to map them?  I'm not sure if that's a complete up to date list though.

1/4 to 1/2 of any city may well be made up of tax-exempt properties. Many people, typically of lesser income, give real estate holdings to their church when they pass on. So, the property then becomes tax-exempt. The dirty little secret in NOLA is that a pretty good amount of the blight is from these properties, which the churches don't do anything with. This was something that stunned me when working with Ujamaa and having access to the listings, NORA and otherwise.

Hey there-- I created the map you suggested, here:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=200145748551982830913.0004c3b3314e16f3ed713.

Thanks for all the invaluable work you do on our community's behalf...

...and of course there are many more that "Charity Blossom" link doesn't list, for example this aggravating piece of shit: http://www.legis.state.la.us/Ngo/NgoDoc.aspx?NgoId=338&search=

...accidentally (or deliberately?) mis-listed under the 70119 area code, this house has been rotting empty and unused beneath a "Monarch House: Coming Soon" bannner ever since October '08, when a few people in elegant suits gave away a few notebook and pencils to neighborhood kids and then disappeared forever.

Holy crap! Thanks for the map. Very useful to see them all at once like that. Some of those are legit, but some of the other names alone make me think I'm in the wrong business.

JB, thank you for the map! I'm out of town right now but I will screen shot it when I get back home next week and post the screen shot. Thanks again.
