A con-profit reckoning?

Looks like someone is digging up some old con-profit corpses and bringing them back from the dead:

Auditors:  Nonprofits with ties to current and former JP councilmen misused hundreds of thousands of dollars

Our old buddy former Jefferson Parish councilman and C-note Richmond wingman, Byron Lee, looks like he may have finally been snagged in the con-profit epic along with current JP councilman, Mark Spears.

AZ has covered some of Byron's con-profit meanderings ever since he came across my radar after I uncovered the NOCAP/NOCE con-profit scam perpetrated by Congressman Cedric Richmond and uber-political operative, Ike Spears.

Oh...that reminds me...in case you aren't keeping up, Nadine Ramsey announced her candidacy for City Council District C a couple of weeks ago.  I'm curious how she was going to justify residing over the Wisner hearing as an ad hoc judge in District D, offer ruling on that matter, then turn right around and announce her candidacy for city council.  I think I may have done her a favor by calling out the conflict when I did.  Also funny how no one seemed to care that the LA Supreme Court produced two separate, unstamped, documents on the same day for Justice Johnson's court order that had named Ramsey as a CDC ad hoc judge.   Both documents were requested approximately one month after the original order was supposedly created...one order was signed by the Clerk of Court, the order I received was unsigned.  Why were there two separate documents for the same court order?

Regardless,  Slabbed has been all over Byron , much more so than I considering it's a JP matter...waters I don't normally sail.  In fact, I think Doug originally broke this story.

I wonder if C-note will call in a favor to his new buddy in the local U.S. Attorneys Office to get some slack cut for Byron.  We'll soon know if this whole thing seems to magically go up in smoke like the elusive internal report on the commenting scandal that was supposedly being conducted by the DOJ.

Our old buddy and Apostle of the almighty, Leonard Lucas, probably won't be so lucky:

LOWER 9TH WARD ORG'S RECOVERY MONEY RAISES IRE OF STATE AUDITOR

Thanks for the HT, Mr. Defender.

As readers know Lucas, the original Prophet of the Con-profit, is a long time target of AZ and I  reported back in June of 2012 that I had uncovered the motherlode of con-profit mining schemes when I started researching Lucas and his associate Audrey Walker.  Lucas had a whopping seven non-profits domiciled in a gutted building on 6030 St. Claude Avenue and between Walker and the Apostle I found 23 registered 501c3's back in 2010....earning them the infamous title of being the "Con-profit King and Queen of New Orleans".  I challenged anyone to outdo the Apostle and Walker and so far no one has even attempted to challeng the royal court.

That is until this report by the LA Legislative Auditor.

So it looks like the con-profit epic in New Orleans may be taking a turn for the worse...at least for some of those on the lower rungs of the ladder.  I'm sure you'll never see C-Note or Ike in that number...and should I even mention Bajoie?  Nah...no sense in bringing that zombie back to life, eh?

A non-non sequitur (you figure it out):

As I was writing this post it reminded me of the late night perusing I've been doing of the Michael Sherman email threads on Wisner and how in this city there seems to be only one degree of separation between just about everyone.

Retraction:  In this original post I posted an email from Michael Sherman's email chain and suggested a "Nadine" named in the email may have been Nadine Ramsey.  It was not Nadine Ramsey and I have deleted the email from this post.  Mea Culpa.

It seems like Sherman was a thread that weaved his way through all kinds of deals:

I'll do my best to avoid pointing out the sycophantic babbling to C-note (oops, I guess I just did) and just point out that Sherman seemed to be actively lobbying for Laney Chouest's NOLA Mortorsports park venture on multiple avenues.  That's curious considering Sherman claimed he had never met Mr. Chouest in a Wisner Trust Advisory Committee meeting.

It's also interesting because it's apparent from Sherman's emails that he had a significant interest in the JEDCO/JP Fairfield development which encompasses Chouest's NOLA Motorsports Park and is adjacent to Wisner property.  In fact, it appears as if Sherman may have even played a role in Chouest's purchase of the land from Joseph Marcello, who owns a massive portion of the property slated for development in the Fairfield footprint.  What's most important is that it appears he was conducting much of this business while holding a position as a City Attorney and serving as the appointee to the Wisner Trust Advisory Committee for Mayor Landrieu.

Tomorrow...Tomorrow...I love ya...tomorrow..

...you're only a day away!

Businessman pleads guilty to bribing former Mayor Ray Nagin

I think there needs to be a comma in that headline.

Anyway...I predict that DOJ calls a press conference tomorrow and the axe falls on Ray Ray.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!!!  Is that schadenfreude?  Maybe a little but more importantly Nagin's indictment will be a landmark day for the city of New Orleans...the pinnacle of post-Katrina, white collar, corruption sweeps.  It will garner mucho national attention, I'm sure some of it will be not so good, but the important thing is it will set a precedent in this city that "the game" has changed.

Of course, I'm probably wrong...it may not go down tomorrow but it will go down soon enough.

Where's the party?

Oh...and...remember Junkaroos and Moveroos?  Just remember, you heard about that here first.  I am pretty sure C-Note's buddy, Byron Lee, is having some sphincterific moments right now along with one or two HANO officials.  How do I know this?  Let's just say....the same way I think Heebe's defense team found the DOJ commenters from Nola.com.

I would love to interview Mark St. Pierre right about now

Jim Bridger, former Public Belt RR exec, sentenced to 2 years of probation

These teaches me one lesson....crime pays in New Orleans.

Want to me to prove it again?  Did any of you happen to catch the story about the new $710k Hano contract given out to a company called "Junkaroos & Moveroos" to redevelop the Iberville projects?

Housing Authority to approve four Iberville-related items

Guess who owns Junkaroos and Moveroos?  None other than Jefferson Parish City Council member, Byron Lee!  You know Byron, C-note Richmond's good bud and author of the con-profit known as the Jefferson Sports and Scholastic Foundation.

Get this...Hano awarded the Iberville bid to the newly formed Junkaroos & Moveroos giving them a near perfect score in the bidding process supposedly based on previous performance.  Byron's sterling reputation must have overwhelmed the Hano assessors.

Oh...only one thing.  I'm curious if those gobsmacked assessors took the time to go to the Secretary of State's website and actually make sure Junkaroos & Moveroos was a registered company....because I did...and guess what I found...

I took this screen shot just yesterday....seems Byron's J & M wasn't even in good standing with the SOS when he landed that near perfect score and won the bid.  That's a pretty neat trick, Byron.

Of course...today...he must have paid up as he is now in good standing.

Can't wait to see how that Iberville project turns out.

Oh...there's more coming on the crime pays in NOLA front.  This one will really blow you away and probably make Mark St. Pierre bust out of jail just to strangle someone.

Hang tight...coming soon....

Comment Bump: All Roads Lead to King Georges

Of course....of course this makes sense.  Please read the previous post and comments then read this comment.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "They did merge":
As an aside, the property ownesrhip and parcel / description information for 2423 Bainbridge St Kenner is strangely not available on the JP Assessors site. It's one thing for the address not to pop up in the assessor site, it's a whole other for the property to have absolutely no description info, this is what turns up:

"Address: 2423 BAINBRIDGE ST
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lot: N/A
Square: N/A
Section: N/A
Subdivision: N/A
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Area: KENNER
Zip Code: 70062
Neighborhood: CITY OF KENNER
Council District: 3 - BYRON LEE "

This may be a topic for another day (or these parcels could be related, who knows, because there are a lot of them) but the property ***right next door 2501 Bainbridge St Kenner shows up with absolutely ZERO assessed value (though obviously having a lot of structures and work on it):

"Parcel# Owner Location Description Assessment Action

3923110751 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3923110755 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3822313271 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3701410110 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3430884503 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3420832373 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3420835282 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3300507545 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3200312772 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3100129862 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0
3100129864 M & M GAMING INC 2501 BAINBRIDGE ST 0"

And if you look up M&M Gaming it is owned by none other than John Georges.

The zero assessments in JP for some major properties is something that ha turned up on Slabbed before.

Just an fyi, but those are a lot of parcels, it is the property next door and again there is no ownership or description info for 2423 Bainbridge itself so who knows.

Hey isn't Chehardy now the JP assessor?

Con-Profit status moves to Severe

While Slabbed and others have been sounding the alarm for some time, it seems the MSM is catching up.

I'll direct you to this post on Click-Jefferson:

In addition to state funds, both groups have also received funds from Jefferson Parish.

The Jefferson Sports & Scholastic Foundation is a group that was formed by Councilman Lee and Lee’s campaign treasurer, Lester Dunn, is the group’s director. The group has a Gretna address but is also “not in good standing” with the state’s Secretary of State for failing to file corporate reports with the state. Their last report filed with the Secretary of State was in June 2008.

As ClickJefferson.com reported in 2007, through the years, Councilman Lee has funneled almost $200,000 in funds the parish received from the River Birch landfill settlement to the group. These funds were intended to be directed towards projects in Waggaman where the landfill resides to improve Waggaman’s quality of life.

In his bio on the Jefferson Parish web site, Councilman Lee is listed as a Board Member of the Thompson Thibodeaux Community Development Group.

The group is also “not in good standing” with the state’s Secretary of State for failing to file corporate reports with the state.

In June of 2009, the JP Council approved giving Thompson/ Thibodeaux $300,000 for “exterior painting and minor home repairs to a minimum of forty (40) low and moderate income elderly and handicapped homeowners in Jefferson Parish.” It is unknown if this work was completed.

Heads will roll.  I wonder if Byron took the La Cosa Nostra oath with C-Note and Ike?

It's a catchy tune..

...the con-profit beat seems to be the zeitgeist:

Arrest may allow for removal of Algiers eyesore

Non-profit unable to honor commitment turning blight into low-income housing

But the one con-profit related story I'd like you to read comes from our bud SOP from Slabbed:

It’s elementary my dear Watson. This is a “crime family” affair. Slabbed takes a look at a recent earmark/charity looting in Jefferson Parish. Part 1 a few of the key players.

JP Councilperson Byron Lee....the Jefferson Sports and Scholastic Foundation...River Birch...

...I'm pretty sure SOP is on to something.

Also keep in mind that Byron Lee's hands have been pretty full as of late, being Cedric Richmond's "handler" and right hand man.  Although word is if he can keep Cedric's nose clean (pfftt..sorry...I've had a cold) through the election, he'll be rewarded handsomely at the big show (D.C.)...perhaps even being named CR's chief of staff.

I can't wait.
