I apologize for this rant...but I just have to

The young girl's freedom to demand that other people's freedom should be taken away..... is being taken away? Who comes up with these fucking ads?

Per HP

I still, for the life of me....just don't get these people. What are they so scared of? A coming storm? How?

A California doctor who must choose between her faith and her job? What? She can't practice medicine anymore if gay people are allowed to marry? WTF...did gay marriage advocates suddenly militarize a gay gestapo and I didn't hear about it? Is Glen Beck gonna fill me in soon on the growing Nazi homosexuals who are spreading socialism and gayness around the country and building homo-concentration camps in Montana?

What if every gay couple in America was allowed to get married...what would happen? Would the earth shift off it's axis? Would there be gay goon squads terrorizing your neighborhood? Would homosexuals be knocking on your door like the Mormons with pamphlets that are encouraging you and your children to be gay?

At the very worst Bravo would launch Gay Housewives of San Francisco....which couldn't be any worse than the Housewives of Atlanta....and guess what? You can just turn the fucking channel....just like I do when I happen to cross the 700 Club or Fox News. Even if you see a gay couple holding hands in the park....you can just...ignore them. Isn't that a novel idea? Gee...how easy would that be?

Instead, these people have to spend a shitload of money on TV commercials like this one. A coming storm....isn't this reminiscent of the fear mongers who keep prophesying a coming race war?

The Nation for Marriage website does their best to divert that:

1. Are you a bigot? “Why do you want to take away people’s rights?”

“Isn’t it wrong to write discrimination into the constitution?”

A: “Do you really believe people like me who believe mothers and fathers both matter to kids are like bigots and racists? I think that’s pretty offensive, don’t you? Particularly to the 60 percent of African-Americans who oppose same-sex marriage. Marriage as the union of husband and wife isn’t new; it’s not taking away anyone’s rights. It’s common sense.”

60% of African Americans agree with them? Who conducted that poll? That reminds me of the guy who goes off on a racist rant then says, "Some of my best friends are black!"

And then there's this:

2. Isn’t the ban on gay marriage like bans on interracial marriage?

A: “Bans on interracial marriage were about keeping two races apart so that one race could oppress the other. Marriage is about bringing two sexes together, so that children get the love of their own mom and a dad, and women don’t get stuck with the enormous disadvantages of parenting alone.” “Having a parent of two different races is just not the same as being deprived of your mother—or your father.”

- Bans on interracial marriage were about keeping two races apart so that one race could oppress the other.

Huh? Gee, I thought it was about fear....xenophobia. I never realized there was a master plan for racial oppression behind bans on interracial marriage. I'm actually in an interracial marriage and I don't remember any white boys telling me I was betraying the cause for oppression when I got married. I remember disapproval...but then again I grew up in the hills of Kentucky....so that's to be expected.

- Having a parent of two different races is just not the same as being deprived of your mother—or your father.”

And how is gay marriage a threat to mothers and fathers? And wait..."having a parent of two different races"...do they mean a single parent that is mixed race, or two parents of different races? I'm so confused I can't even refute this stupid shit.

. Why do you want to interfere with love?

A: “Love is a great thing. But marriage isn’t just any kind of love; it’s the special love of husband and wife for each other and their children.”

Unless of course the married couple doesn't have children.

"Love is great thing"....but only in the way they define it.

I can't imagine how miserable these people's lives must be. They must sit around utterly tormented knowing that other people may be deriving pleasure from life in ways they don't understand.

You know....I don't understand how people get off on counting rosary beads, but I don't hate on 'em for doing it. I don't understand how people get off by shoving beads up their arse but I don't hate on them either. Point is...its a free country, man...let people be free.

Homophobia....xenophobia....they're one in the same. Its fear of the "other".

i come from a very large family. there are 32 of us total. as you might guess, when you have that large of a family group, they're bound to be many different types in the pot. from religion, politics to lifestyles-we have quite a mix and we all live here in the city.
recently a friend asked me how we did it. how do we all get along so well? and we seem to spend a great deal of time together. well, it's simple. we have a true respect for each other and we never forget that our love for family is more important than personal opinions.

it makes me ill when i see such hatred - and i'll never understand it.

Thanks for this ranting.
It isn't ranting.

I was raised by gay moms, and our home was great. It was peaceful, stable, creative, and fun. My moms have been together for thirty five years.

I'm straight, partnered, in my thirties, I have kids of my own, and the way people feel free to reject and trash my moms and my family still hurts.

It is fucked up that these people seem to be suggesting that if it were not for gay people, some straight men would not desert the women they get pregnant, leaving them to be single parents.

Come on. Gay people have nothing to do with that.

That's not about gay marriage. It's not about being raised by gay parents.

My brother and many other men grew up without their fathers in their homes, and they are in happy, committed connected relationships with their own wives and kids.

Attacking single moms is such an old misogynist trick, and it sucks. They didn't have abortions, did they? If your man leaves you when you are pregnant, or if you are abused and need to run, what the hell are you supposed to do?

There are also plenty of straight families where both parents parent actively, put their kids first, love them and care for them, but for whatever reason the marriages fail, and the whole family has to adjust.

Are these asses seriously suggesting that gay people are at the root of this?

I'd have put jobs that pay enough to live on and other money issues WAAAAY ahead of evil gays.

Two moms were fantastic, and kids I grew up with who lived with their two gay Dads have managed to create healthy adult relationships, too.

Men, straight or gay, can raise happy sons and daughters all on their own. I've seen it.

(Single fathers don't get picked on the way single moms do, because people just act like they don't exist at all.)

These people should fix their own families instead of picking on our families.

I come from a very conservative family and am conservative myself...and I couldn't agree more. I don't frankly care if you want to get married and I don't care if you want to marry more than one person. As long as everyone is over 18, I don't care.

I've known plenty of people that were children of gay men and women and guess what, they were pretty cool people. And yes, I've been hit on by gay men - you know what those guys took rejection far better than I ever did with a woman. I was impressed.

I have also hung out with partners that would be considered married and they are just like a regular couple, and the comedians are wrong, they do not have it any easier than straight couples. I have to tell you its funny to see they have the same arguments word for word.

Propaganda of the worst sort from narrow minded bigots. They will go to hell.

I know and respect more gay people that I can mention. Some of them have raised children who are wonderful.

It seems to me the "Christian Army" is no doubt behind this message--somewhere. This is how they work.

But what do I know? I am a straight Native American/Jew. I'm not allowed in those circles.

My poor children. . .

Charlotte, I think they are already in Hell. A Hell on Earth.

Sparky, that was a nice post.

Gay family anon, if you are in your thirties, you lived through AIDS hitting your community. As a kid, you must have lost men you loved.

Your family lived through many years of governments and social institutions that must have made your moms worried that you might be taken away...

...or that they would not be able to visit if someone ended up in hospital, etc.

In some places lesbianism is still considered mental illness or crime.

You said you are straight. I wonder if you are ever irrationally afraid that someone will take your kids, as a holdover from the fear you must have grown up with.

Even if your moms never told you there were scared, I bet sometimes they were.

You lived this experience in an era when you could not talk about being part of a gay family as openly as we can today.

Your family went without many kinds of family benefit, and your moms paid more taxes than a straight family with kids did. As we don't have a pay equity culture, they may have been earning less to start with.

They may have had to be in the closet at work.

Your family put love, family, personal integrity, living your values, and other good things ahead of money, and you didn't buckle in the face of hatred.

If the crazies really want kids to be alright, they will stop discriminating against gay families.

The kids of gay families from your generation are ordinary HEROS of our civil society.

Thank you.

Boring... This is so 2004...

Let's fix this WAY up stream:

Get rid of *ALL* state sponsored marriages (and create some child's rights to protect them). Couples of any sort could then still create a legal civil union with a lawyer. Problem gone and there's no more shouting about how enlightened you are (or are not).

Keep ranting! I've never understood the whole hysteria regarding those who are afraid of gay people having the same civil rights as a straight person would. In fact, it makes my head swim when I think about it.
I've always questioned why people are so damn interested in a gay persons sexual life. Like this small part of someone completely defines who they are as a human being.
My grandmother had a term for these types of folks....."they will choke on a gant, but swallow a camel".

I just finished watching a documentary called Outrage about closeted politicians.

It was incredibly interesting, highly recommend it, it's on HBO.

Great post, Dambala. And great comments one and all. If the haters are so worried about single moms, why don't they start by outlawing divorce? I wonder how many in this "Christian movement" have already been divorced, or have had "outside" relationships of any kind.

Hey, upstream--

I like that idea. It is amazing that Utah of all states is doing some potentially interesting things.

One of the points made by a lawyer arguing the gay marriage issue as it went through the Canadian courts was that many Aboriginal Nations on this continent traditionally acknowledge the reality and validity of homosexual love, and have forms of gay marriage.

I love that.

I love to tell defenders of "traditional" marriage that on this continent, it is those who recognize marital love in its beautiful variety who are upholding the deep traditions of this land.

I'd like to hit the playback button right at that point, sending their own words back to them:

"People who come to this country should learn to act like real Americans, learning to do things in the American way, not imposing their foreign values on us and sticking to their own languages and cultural practices for generations!"

Gay marriage is as American as the buffalo. It is not a new innovation. It is just being reintroduced.

Anon 10:04,

Don't make sense, for Christ's sake....you'll confuse them.

Having a background in anthropology, I more than appreciate that perspective.

A great example is the berdache in the Native American plains tribes. Not all men were cut out to count coup...it was accepted that some men play the female role and in a harsh environment that role was essential to the survival and health of the tribe. Ever see Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman?

Cultures who live closer to the earth tend to just get things we don't. The sterile and isolating nature of "civilization" has some pretty fucked up side effects...sexual repression and intolerance being on the top of the list.

But dude"traditional" to them means whatever their batshit pastor tells them...the same guy who is probably fucking multiple members of his congregation...male or female. To associate "tradtional" with anything past thier parent's or grandparent's views would be blashpemy.

In fact, if you look at the propaganda behind televangelism...it almost always invokes this warped sense of nostalgia that "things were better back then", i.e., Jerry Falwell's "Old Time Religion". Like somehow their parents and grandparents weren't subject to the same magnitude of human experience which they are. This false sense of nostalgia implies that somehow their grandparents were "pure" and immune from the temptations or "deviance" which they are subject to today.

What a load of shit. Their ancestors were so sexually repressed and internally tormented they were burning women at the stake in Salem. And mind you I think some of these people would like to resort to those measures even today.
